our journey to becoming a therapy dog team
I brought home my first Great Dane as a 20-year-old college Senior, and I had dreams of him accompanying me to hospitals and schools as a perfectly-behaved therapy dog who loved everyone he met. As it turns out, I brought home an adorable little basket case who would struggle throughout his life with anxiety and fearful reactivity and aggression. He was an incredible dog despite his challenges, but he certainly didn’t have the temperament to be a therapy dog, so my goals would be put on hold for a decade.
In early 2020, I said goodbye to Emmet, my sweet but ornery “problem child,” and a few weeks later I brought home a fawn Great Dane puppy, who I named Grey after his predecessor (who was gray in color). While I wouldn’t have traded Emmet for the world, and I’ll forever be grateful for every lesson he taught me, life is so much different with a friendly, confident dog.
Grey is the sweetest creature I’ve ever encountered. He loves checking out new places and meeting new people, and his sweet demeanor makes him not only the perfect ambassador to his breed, but also the most amazing therapy dog.
Since he first came home at 8 weeks old, Grey has gone everywhere with me. From training classes to stores and outdoor restaurant seating, I’ve taken every experience as an opportunity to socialize and train this boy. As a result of that (along with his impeccable breeding), he makes me proud every day as we receive compliments on his manners and disposition.
I am so lucky to be this boy’s momma, and I am so thrilled with every experience we have together as a therapy dog team. It’s incredible to watch him bring so much joy to others who need it!
